EDWARD EASTWOOD AND ELINA GROMOVA INDICTED

Greeneville residents charged in nine-count indictment

[GREENEVILLE, TN] -On May 12, 2009, a federal grand jury in Greeneville indicted Edward K. Eastwood, age 63, and Elina Gromova Eastwood, age 42, of Greeneville, Tennessee. A trial date has been set for July 3, 2009, in United States District Court in Greeneville, Tennessee.

Edward Eastwood is charged in six counts of the indictment with conspiracy to defeat the Internal Revenue Service (IRS); evasion of payment of income taxes; perjury; and, structuring financial transactions to avoid the issuance of currency transaction reports by a domestic financial institution. If convicted, Edward Eastwood faces a term of imprisonment of five years on each count; a total maximum fine of $1,350,000; a maximum term of supervised release of eighteen years; and total maximum special assessments of $600.

Elina Gromova (formerly Eastwood) is charged in four counts with conspiracy to defeat the IRS; evasion of payment of income taxes; and, perjury. If convicted, Elina Gromova faces a term of imprisonment of five years on each count; a total maximum fine of $850,000; a maximum term of supervised release of twelve years; and total maximum special assessments of $400.

The indictment of Edward Eastwood and Elina Gromova is the result of an investigation by the Greene County Sheriff’s Department, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and the IRS - Criminal Investigation. Assistant U.S. Attorney Helen Smith will represent the United States.

Members of the public are reminded that an indictment constitutes only charges and that every person is presumed innocent until guilt has been proven beyond a reasonable doubt.
